BUDS IN THE ROOM

The tournament became a holiday tradition for the group. We won our first (…and only) Boxing Day championship in a for-profit event organized by another team.

2017

THE INCEPTION

Embarrassed by our effort in 2017, the group remained hungry for another shot at gold. To our surprise, the event folded weeks before puck drop... all that cardio for nothing!

We saw this cancellation as an opportunity to create something special. Not just for players and patrons alike, but for those who need a reason to smile during the holiday season.

Over many nights and countless cold ones, we talked about how much we missed that tournament. By New Year's Eve we had our own rendition planned.

quarantine cup

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we were unable to offer the tournament as we had planned. Fortunately, this opened the door for some internal competition... and much needed practice.

Thankfully, old friends and stiff family members gathered around to keep the tradition alive - we were able to raise $500 in the process.

ego check

We gave it our best shot... but didn't fare well with the increase in competition as the event gained popularity.

Santa's Little Helpers, led by captain and tournament MVP Mitch McGrath, took down Brett Vokey's BAR Beer League. Even the small ice surface of St. Bon's wasn't enough for Vokey's aging veteran group, as Santa's Little Helpers were crowned champions.

The first annual Christmas Classic, comprised of 6 teams of 9 players, was a huge success, raising $1,500 for Candlelighters NL.

Groundhog day

As Covid cases skyrocketed in the days leading up to Christmas we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the tournament for another year. Through incredible generosity and support from players, friends, family, and corporate donations, we were able to crush our goal and raise a total of $4,244 for Candlelighters NL to support all they do for the toughest kids in our province.

To all those that contributed, whether it was through your time, money, support or awareness - we can’t thank you enough. It means the world to us. Although it wasn’t the day we planned for, the boxing day skate tradition lived on with a game of hockey played on the outdoor rink.

2023

THE TRADITION CONTINUES

What an unbelievable 2023 Christmas Classic. Congratulations to Santa’s Little Helpers for their 3rd straight W! 🏆

The countless instances of heartwarming generosity from our players, sponsors, ticket buyers, spectators, and supporters added up to a $12,613 donation to Candlelighters NL on behalf of the 2023 Christmas Classic.

When we started this tournament 5 years ago, it was nothing more than an excuse to get together with friends for a skate while everyone was home. At the same time, we thought it would be a nice gesture to give back during the holidays by raising money and awareness for those in need. 5 years, 3 tournaments, and $24,057 donated later, we can’t help but look back with immense gratitude for all the support we’ve received over the years.

We’re so happy this has become just as much of a tradition for others as it is for us. All I can say is thank you - I can’t begin to describe how much it means to us all.

As always, we'll see you again next year 🎅🏻🎄

finally

We were able to play hockey for the first time since our inaugural 2019 tournament. All we can say is WOW. We raised $5,200 for Candlelighters NL this year, bringing our 4-year donation total to $11,444.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to each and every person who supported us this year.

To the teams that come back year after year, thank you. Finding teams to play on Boxing Day should be the hard part, but you make it easy. We're grateful and proud that The Christmas Classic has become as much of a holiday tradition for your friend groups as it is for ours.

Last but not least, congratulations to the back-to-back champions, Santa's Little Helpers. Can they make it 3 in a row?

We'll find it out next year.
